TOKYO: A suspected North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fired on Thursday afternoon landed inside Japan’s unique financial zone, west of the nation’s north coast, the federal government stated.
“Our present evaluation signifies that the ballistic missile flew for 71 minutes and round 15:44 (0644 GMT), it landed in waters inside Japan’s unique financial zone within the Sea of Japan about 150 kilometers west of Hokkaido’s Oshima peninsula,” stated Makoto Oniki, Japan’s state minister for protection.
“Given the ballistic missile this time round flew at an altitude of over 6,000 km, which was a lot larger than the Hwasong-15 ICBM that was launched in November 2017, the one immediately is believed to be a brand new ICBM,” he added.
He stated that the ministry had not obtained any reviews of injury to ships or planes, calling the launch a “severe risk” to Japan’s safety.
“At a time when the world is coping with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea is urgent forward with launches that unilaterally worsen provocations towards the worldwide group, which is completely unforgivable,” Oniki stated.
