VATICAN CITY —Pope Francis went to the Russian embassy to the Holy See on Friday to relay his concern over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to Moscow’s ambassador, in an unprecedented departure from diplomatic protocol.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated the pope spent about half-hour on the embassy, which is near the Vatican.
“He went to precise his concern over the conflict,” Bruni instructed Reuters. Bruni wouldn’t touch upon a report that the pope, 85, had provided the Vatican’s mediation.
It was believed to be the primary time a pope has gone to an embassy to speak to an envoy in a time of battle. Overseas envoys are normally summoned by the Vatican’s Secretary of State or meet with the pope within the Apostolic Palace.
In an interview with Reuters of Feb. 14, earlier than the invasion, Ukraine’s ambassador to the Vatican, Andriy Yurash, stated Kyiv can be open to a Vatican mediation of the battle. L1N2UP1AH
