“We’ve got no plans to invade” – that was the message from Russia’s overseas minister after talks with the US about Russian intentions in Ukraine. His American counterpart stated their discussions in Geneva had been “frank and substantive” but in addition warned of “large penalties” if Moscow have been to assault Ukraine.
Russia has amassed 100,000 troops close to its borders with Ukraine. It is led to the western alliance, Nato, reinforcing its army presence in jap Europe. President Putin has demanded that Ukraine be stopped from ever becoming a member of Nato.
In the course of the Chilly Struggle the Soviet Union managed most of jap Europe, with the NATO alliance, which incorporates the US and the UK, ranged in opposition to it.
